So…it’s been quite some time since the last time I posted any content here. Let’s just say after my previous post, blogging came to a hard stop. Not because I did not want to, but I did not have anything to say. BUT God began blowing my mind outside of this blog.
And now…I want to share these things with you.
I can’t promise you that posts will always be uplifting, or encouraging, or give you a feel-good mood for the morning, because life isn’t like that. Life as a believer isn’t always like that, but I will promise to give you the truth with God’s word and my experience as a preacher’s kid growing and learning about her faith.
So…where should we start?
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark 16:15-18 NKJV
After re-dedicating my life to Christ and baptized (again), life began to shift for me as a believer. I use the term believer now because there is more to just saying that we know Christ. If anything, becoming a believer again has taught me how my relationship with God goes beyond reading, praying, and even fasting; it’s a transformational lifestyle that goes beyond self.
Like the verse above, Christ expects those of us who know him to be able to do the same things He has done and greater (John 1:50). Outlined in Matthew 10:8, Jesus Christ commanded the twelve disciples to “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” There is an expectation to believing that I had not seen before, a standard of living that God expects and expected. This standard of living requires love and trust that my life as a Christian could not comprehend.
But why do I differentiate my life as a Christian from that of a believer? Let’s put it this way, you begin a new relationship with a significant other. At first, you become madly in love with each other; you talk every day, you can’t go two seconds without thinking about them, and you see those cupids swirling around your head every time you see them. However, somewhere down the line after the newness of it all wears off, you find yourself not doing the things you used to; things begin to slow and you find that you and your s/o feel more distant. You still say you’re in a relationship, BUT you find other people becoming more attractive, distractions easily come, and instead of your s/o being your favorite person, they become a person of convenience.
This is how I treated God growing up and for many years of young adulthood. Doesn’t it sound awful? It starts to mirror neglect, ungratefulness, and a loveless relationship that’s one-sided. As I became new again, I found that this repeated pattern could no longer be.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12:2 KJV
Believers don’t neglect their relationship. Believers don’t have wandering eyes or minds. Believers don’t allow distractions. Believers don’t let their love wax cold. Instead of being a some-timey s/o to God, I decided to cling to Him and never let go (Joshua 23:8). This transformation causes you to change everything about yourself and starting with my mindset, I wanted exactly that. Going in the opposite direction, I wanted to take on the characteristics of a so-called “clingy girlfriend”. In other words, I wanted and still want to be so dependent on God that I can’t imagine life without Him.
Now, I won’t say that this now healthy dependent relationship is easy, but it teaches me that true, unconditional love takes work. There will always be some part of your relationship with God that will continuously challenge you to better yourself. But 1 John 4:18 puts it nicely for all of us, we have no reason to fear this kind of love, because it is perfect. Honestly, if you are going to spend eternity with someone, don’t you want to love them already and in the best way?
So my point is, as I am differentiating between the two, it is still a learning process. Reconciliation has become the best part of this experience because it’s like I never left, but now my eyes are open to what I had missed. Like the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-24), it’s not that my Father has changed, it’s me who is experiencing Him differently. As a Christian, I was once at home but I wanted to do my own thing. But as a believer, I have returned and been welcomed by the Father who has always accepted me.
With that being said, God is still teaching me how to be a servant, a friend, a Bible-believing blogger, and much much more. As He is patient with me, I pray that you who have subscribed will do so in the same way. The content of theheartofapreacherskid.com will change because of this growth process, but God will always remain at the center.
